Riaan M. Coetzee

Once again, I find myself drawn to what is often seen but overlooked. The understated Anthophycus longifolius, a slender-bladed macroalga, has captured my attention. It’s easy to recognise by the small, pearl-like pneumatocyst near the base of each blade.

This air-filled pocket helps it float closer to sunlight for photosynthesis. In the water, it moves gently with the current, almost as if it’s part of the flow. What draws me in is both its gentle, fluid motion and its jewellery-like simplicity.
